The short version
j1d.ca is a URL shortener. We collect the minimum data needed to operate the service and to stop bad actors from turning it into a spam cannon. We don’t run ads, we don’t sell anything, and we don’t share data with third parties for marketing.
What we collect
- When you shorten a link: the IP address you connected from, a timestamp, and the long URL you submitted.
- When someone follows a short link: the IP address of the follower and a timestamp, kept for 90 days and then auto-deleted.
- No cookies from us. The only thing stored in your browser is your chosen theme (light, dark, or follow system), held locally by your browser for your convenience.
Why we collect it
IP addresses and timestamps are used to enforce a per-hour rate limit and to investigate and block abuse (phishing, malware, scams). IP bans have a 30-day lifetime and then expire automatically. Redirect logs let us answer “was this short link used for something it shouldn’t be?” if a complaint comes in.
Where it lives
Data is stored in Amazon Web Services (DynamoDB) in the us-east-1 region (Northern Virginia, USA). It is not copied to any other location.
Requests and deletion
If you believe a short link points at abusive content, or if you want your data removed, reach out to the owner and we’ll handle it. Because we don’t collect account info, there is no login to “delete your account” from.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially we’ll update the date at the top. The site is small enough that version history lives on GitHub rather than in a mailing list.
